Yakir Levin, MD, PhD

Dr. Yakir Levin, MD, PhD, is a Harvard dermatologist, physician-scientist, and innovator in laser medicine and aesthetics. After completing his MD and PhD degrees at Stanford University, he completed dermatology residency at Boston University Medical Center, where he served as chief resident. He then completed the prestigious Laser and Cosmetic Fellowship under the mentorship of Dr. Rox Anderson and Dr. Mathew Avram at the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH).
Dr. Levin is currently Assistant Professor of Dermatology at Harvard Medical School; he is an attending physician and physician-scientist at MGH and at the Wellman Center for Photomedicine, where he combines translational research with a robust clinical practice. At the MGH Dermatology Laser and Cosmetic Center (DLCC), Dr. Levin provides expert care in cosmetic dermatology and has particular expertise in the laser treatment of children with life- altering birthmarks. He sees and treats patients from around the world with complex congenital pigmentary disorders, including rare presentations requiring multidisciplinary care. He is also staff physician at Shriners Hospital for Children, where he cares for children with impactful birthmarks and burn scars who do not otherwise have access to care. He participates in the training of two clinical fellows each year in the treatment of these conditions. Dr. Levin is a national leader in academic cosmetic dermatology, uniquely blending clinical excellence, innovation, and devicebased research. He has published over 30 peerreviewed articles and book chapters, including more than 15 as first or senior author. His research spans pediatric laser surgery, minimally invasive aesthetics, and translational photomedicine. He has secured competitive funding from the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery (ASDS) and the Pediatric Dermatology Research Alliance (PeDRA). As coinvestigator, he also leads a Department of Defense–funded effort to develop topical products to prevent thermal burns. Dr. Levin holds multiple awarded and pending patents, reflecting his focus on translational innovation and clinical impact. His work a novel skin patch designed to improve the comfort and safety of laser procedures has led to a marketed product, demonstrating the real-world impact of his research. Dr. Levin also serves as co-chair of the Virtual Magic Wand program, a national initiative that teaches residents and faculty the process of clinical innovation. Through this role, he has mentored over 30 physicians in identifying and refining problems worth solving—several of whom have gone on to develop startup companies and future products. In addition to his research accomplishments, Dr. Levin is a dedicated educator and mentor. He also serves as a faculty sponsor and mentor to research fellows awarded grants from the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology (EADV) and the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery (ASLMS). His mentorship bridges clinical care and investigative dermatology, with emphasis on evidence-based aesthetic practice. Dr. Levin is active in national leadership, currently serving as PresidentElect of the Association for Academic Cosmetic Dermatology (AACD) and recently as Program Chair for the 2024 ASLMS Annual Meeting. He has received multiple notable recognitions, most recently the AACD Rising Star Award. He serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology and of Dermatologic Surgery. |
